What Is ISI (Ice Skating Institute)?

Ice Skating Institute (ISI) provides the internationally acclaimed weSKATE program — the first national learn-to-skate curriculum in the United States — to more than 600 rinks throughout the country, Asia and the Middle East. Skaters progress through many levels of testing for all ages and abilities. The tests go from 1 foot glides all the way to double axels and triples jumps and includes special skater, a program that encompasses all special needs, whether mental or physical.

Both seasonal and year round ice rinks also provide opportunities for skaters to participate in exhibitions, shows, local and district competitions. There are a wide variety of different event categories including figures, hockey, freestyle, ice dance, and pairs as well as fun events such as spotlight, footwork, rhythmic skating and interpretive to name a few. There are also 17 Group and Team events such as Family Spotlight, Kaleidoskate Team, Synchronized Formation Team, Team Surprise and Theater Production.

ISI also offers the opportunity for participation each year in at least five national/international ISI competitions in various locations across the USA that are open to all ISI members worldwide. Everyone in ISI is permitted to compete in these national/international competitions - there are no qualification rounds.

ISI seeks to develop lifelong skaters, through a program that encourages "participation, not elimination." These programs and events offer something for anyone who wants to skate, regardless of their age, ability or goals. You, too, can be part of the world's largest recreational ice skating community where I and many National champions and Olympians got their start, including: Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Michelle Kwan, Evan Lysacek, Ashely Wagner, Jason Brown, Gracie Gold and many more. Membership to ISI’s learn-to-skate program is $15 for one year and includes excess accident medical coverage and ISI testing program that provides reward patches for levels mastered.
